Materialism The Necklace The Necklace Theme Materialism Quotes Madam Loisel The Necklace is a short story written Guy de Maupassant. It takes place in the late 1800's in Paris, France. Madame Loisel is unhappy with her life and borrows a necklace from her friend. She losses the necklace and her and her husband are plunged into poverty trying to repay the cost of the lost jewelry. Is the obsession with material objects. You can never be happy unless you get what you want. So in the end it was Mdm.Loisel's drive for pretty and expensive items that made her borrow Mdm. Forestier necklace. If Mdm.Loisel didn't desire the excess jewelry and could just go have a good time with her friends she would have never been plunged into debt. The theme of a story is a common thread or repeated idea/message that is shown throughout the whole story BY CIARA McGOLDRICK One of the main themes in this story
is materialism. The theme of materialism
is the most important theme because that
is what drives Mdm.Loisel to make the choice
that she does. "She was one of those pretty and charming girls" Mdm.Loisel was very pretty so she believed
she deserved everything a rich person had,
but she was poor "Instead of being delighted as her husband
had hoped, she flung the invitation petulantly
across the table," She was upset at being invited to her friend's
party because she didn't think she had anything to
wear. Mdm.Loisel was also embarrassed because
she wasn't as rich as her friend If Madam Loisel was a real person I believe she would have narcissistic personality disorder. All she cares about is herself and getting the things that will make her happy. She doesn't consider what will make her husband happy and believes she is the most delightful person ever and deserves everything. Bibliography Sullivan,Edward D. "maupassant, Guy de (1850-1983)."
