Reports of An Earthquake
State of Emergency
A state of emergency has been declared in California where a 7.0 magnitude earthquake resulted in widespread damage early this morning.
The earthquake has been revealed to have occurred at the southern section of the San Andreas Fault, impacting many densely populated communities such as Los Angeles, San Bernandino, and Riverside, California. Though this disaster struck many people off guard, it comes with little surprise to many scientists who have long been predicting a powerful earthquake to occur along this fault. For several years, geologists from many universities such as the Arizona State University have been gathering evidence that suggested that San Andreas was long overdue for the “Big One”, which they say could have been as powerful as 8.1 on the Richter Scale. Though the immediate damage from the earthquake is still unclear, it has left many people asking questions about how these natural disasters occur.
Earthquakes can be explained by the theory of plate tectonics, which states that there are large plates on the earth’s crust which move, causing earthquakes.. There are seven large plates on the earth, in addition to many additional smaller ones. The San Andreas Fault in particular forms a plate boundary between the Pacific Plate and the North American Plate. The slow, creeping movements of these plates over long periods of time occur as a result of convection within the earth’s mantle. In the mantle, the solid portion of rock connected to the crust sinks and rises as it cools and heats due to the extremely high temperatures within the earth. This motion causes the convection currents, which in turn causes movement in the plates.
San Andreas Fault
Though there are several different types of plate boundaries and plate movements, San Andreas Fault is known as a transform boundary. This means that the two plates move horizontally past one another. The movement is also called “right lateral strike slip”. One way to explain this is to imagine that you were standing on one side of the fault and looked across after an earthquake it would appear that the other block moved to the right. Movement significant enough to cause an earthquake occurs after many years of strain have been accumulated, until eventually the earth cannot take the pressure anymore and lurches.
• Always create a family earthquake plan, so even little ones know what they should do in the event of an earthquake.
• Make sure everyone knows where the safe spots in each room are, sturdy tables, desks or against inside walls.
• Know where the dangerous places inside a house are, windows, mirrors, hanging objects, etc.
• Learn first aid and CPR so in the event that you may need it you're ready.
• Have a place to reunite with your family if separated.
• Have a list of emergency phone numbers and supplies.
• Have an out of state friend who you can call and report your conditions.
• Have practice drills, to have yourself and children ready.
• Try not to scare children, but have them educated on what they have to do if there is an earthquake.
• Learn how to shut off the gas, water, and electricity.
• Check Chimneys, roofs, and wall foundations for stability.
• Make sure the water heater and appliances to ensure they can't move enough to rupture utility lines.
• Check your emergency kit to make sure you have, water, food, money, medicine, tools, first aid kit, tools, and clothing. Always make sure all foods and waters are up to date.
• Keep all flammable and hazardous liquids, paints, pest sprays, cleaning products, etc. in a cabinet or secured lower shelf.
• Keep breakables and heavy items on lower shleves. Put latches on cabinet doors to keep them closed during shaking.
Safety During An Earthquake
• If you feel an earthquake look for a sturdy desk or table that you can hide under, stay away from all windows, bookcases, mirrors, or heavy objects that can fall. Occasionally plaster and ceiling tiles can fall so always be weary of this. DO NOT come out from under the desk or table until a few minutes after the shaking stops.
• Always be cautious of glass windows, if they become dislodged they can sail for hundreds of feet.
• If you're in a tall building with no tables or desks to hide under, move to the interior wall. Never use elevators and don't be surprised if alarms and sprinklers begin to go off.
• In the event that you're outside during an earthquake, move to a clear area, stay away from trees, signs, buildings, and electrical wires.
• When driving, pull over to the side of the road, don't park under overpasses, power lines, and other hazards. DO NOT leave the vehicle until after the shaking stops.
• In public spaces don't rush to the exit, move away from display shelves and objects that could fall.
• If you're at a movie theater or stadium, stay in your seat and use your arms to protect your head. After the shaking stops leave calmly, never rush towards exits.
After The Earthquake
• After earthquakes check for injuries and give first aid if necessary.
• Remain Calm and reassure other's if needed.
• Avoid broken glass and fallen power lines.
• Check for fires
• Check gas, water and electric lines. If they are damaged shut off the service.
If there is a gas leak don't use matches, flashlights, appliances, or electric switches. Open the windows, and leave the building. ALWAYS report gas leaks to the company.
• Replace all telephone receivers and ue for emergency calls only.
• Tune into your emergency broadcast station on the radio or television. Listen and pay attention for emergency bulletins.
• Always stay out of damaged buildings.
