The origin
the castellers
·The castellers were born more than 200 years ago. Since 80s in the XX century they have been expanding for all Catalonia and the Balearic Islands.

·They were born in the old Ball of the Valencians. The first documented castle was made in the year 1770 in Arboç.

·Century XIX:
-The first golden age (1851-1889):
The golden age began with the festivities of Santa Tecla in Tarragona.

The golden age began with the festivities of Santa Tecla in Tarragona.
The height of the towers was increasing during the years.
Throughout this time, Vilafranca, Tarragona and Valls did a lot of performances and the highest level are made.
This age ended at Santa Tecla Festival of the year 1889, with a large number of castles of maximum difficulty of eight and nine floors.

·Century XIX and XX:
-Decadence (1889-1926)
The practice of the castles has been reduced and the level of the buildings went down to the lowest in its history.
Several reasons point out such as the arrival of the phylloxera and the opening of the railroad between Valls and Barcelona as one of the causes of this fall of practice

means as oral or immaterial. According to the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, it is the crucible of our cultural diversity and its preservation, a guarantee of permanent creativity.
·Century XX:
-Renaissance (1926-1981)
It started with the appearance of the two new groups, and especially for the Vendrell, rivalry is revived, which leads to an increase in competitiveness that will affect the quality of castles.
The Civil War struck the beginning of recovery and all existing gangs disintegrated temporarily.
-The second golden age (1981-1993)
The women began to participate in some constructions of castles.
From that moment, it was natural because strength is not the main skill required, the technique of the paper is fundamental and the castellers work together according to height and weight.
·Century XX-actuality
-Platinum age (1993-actuality)
In this age the tradition of the castells is characterized for the territorial expansion and the increase of the polpularity.With respect to the achievement of structures, in this age regarding the achievement of new structures, in this age of platinum many of the structures were achieved in the first golden age and also create new castles of maximum difficulty.

The instruments present in any castellera performance are the gralla and the timbal.

It is a journey that is interpreted when the gangs enter the place with a construction.

It is played during the procession. One of the acts that traditionally present in every major celebration is the procession, where dances go through the most important streets and places of the town accompanying the image of the patron or the patron saint.

They wear:
A shirt: With long sleeves.
Trousers: White color.
Girdle: It´s usually black. It's used for protect the lumbar area from the stresses it receives from the loads and movements of the human tower structure.
Most of they are barefoot.
Bandana: Very long, triangular and red with white dots.
Helmet: Small children wear helmets for security.
In the past the castellers wore short trousers, white shirt, skirt, bandana, girdle, bandana on the head, typical shoes ("espardenyes"), "picarols" and castanets.
In Catalonia there are 102 gangs.

The Trabucaires of Solsona is the oldest gang in Catalonia. It has 50 years.

The olddest gang in Barcelona is Castellers de Barcelona(1969). In Girona Castellers de Santa Coloma(1992). In Lleida Castellers d'Esplugues(1994). And in Tarragona Castellers d'Altafulla(1976).

The newest gang in Barcelona is Castellers de Prat de Llobregat(2014). In Girona Minyons de Santa Cristina(2014). In Lleida Margeners de Guissona(2007). And in Tarragona Xiqüelos i Xiqüeles del Delta(2013).

Blue, green, garnet and red are the most popular colors of the groups. But the most poular colour is red.

There are gangs out of Catalonia. There are in Andorra, Valencia, London, París, Copenhagen, Alster, Edinburgh, Irlanda, Hangzhou, Sidney, Melbourne, Montréal, California, Brasil, Paranà...
The castle days
They participate every two years, they made a competition in 2016 and will do another in 2018. The cometitions are in Tarragona and Torredembarra.Some competitions have also been done in Barcelona, Vilafranca, Valls, Vendrell, Reus ...

The most important place of castells is plaça de braus de Tarragona.

In the Plaça de Sant Jaume de Barcelona a castel was made in 1994.
The best performance of the XXI century was made on Barcelona. The Castellers de Vilafranca did this performance on 2016.

In 1981, in the Santa Úrsula day, held at the Plaça del Blat de Valls, two castells of XX century mark the initiation of the segon golden age. The Colla Vella dels Xiquets de Valls and the Colla Joves Xiquets de Valls did the performance.
