How many teams are involved?
The first World Cup was held in 1930
The 20 World Cup tournaments since 1930 have been won by eight different teams.
Brazil have won five times, and they are the only team to have played in every tournament.
Since FIFA awarded the tournament to Russia many people have opposed this decision for a number of reasons
Anti-discrimination groups have recorded 190 racist or far-right incidents in Russian football between 2015 and 2017
A Russian law that bans gay “propaganda” may lead to openly gay and lesbian supporters facing the risk of violence with little protection from Russian authorities.
Russia: Controversial hosts?
World Cup 2018 and the fans
Between March 2015 and November 2017, 208 countries competed to get to the finals, playing a total of 872 matches.
The final tournament involves the 31 successful nations and Russia, the hosts.
A total of 2.5 million tickets will be made available for the 64 matches.
To help prevent fraud and potential trouble at the tournament all match-goers’ will have to carry a Fan ID, which will have their photographs and names on them.
In response to the alleged poisoning of Sergei and Yulia Skripal , Prime Minister Theresa May announced that no British ministers or members of the royal family would attend the World Cup.

England play their three group matches here
Russia is the largest country in the world.
This means that despite only choosing venues in the west of the country two of the stadiums are still 1,800 miles apart!
