The Mole Chapter 9 Lesson Objectives Define relative atomic mass, Ar Relative Atomic Mass How do we calculate the relative molecular mass of a molecular substance? The relative molecular mass of a substance is obtained by adding up the relative atomic mass of all the atoms in its chemical formula. Relative Molecular Mass Many elements and compounds, such as chlorine and nitrogen dioxide, exist as molecules. Relative Formula Mass Ionic compounds like sodium chloride do not exist as molecules. Define relative molecular mass, Mr, and calculate relative molecular mass (and relative formula mass) as the sum of relative atomic masses. The symbol for relative atomic mass is The relative atomic mass is a ratio and therefore has no units. Relative Atomic Mass Why are some Ar values not whole numbers? The relative atomic masses of some elements are not whole numbers. These elements exist as mixtures of isotopes. The relative atomic mass is thus calculated based on the relative percentages of the isotopes. Example 1: Relative atomic mass of chlorine The mass of a molecular substance is measured in terms of its relative molecular mass. Relative Molecular Mass The symbol for relative molecular mass is The relative molecular mass of a molecular substance is the average mass of one molecule of that element or compound compared to 1/12 of the mass of one carbon-12 atom. Example 3: Calculate the relative molecular mass of sodium oxide, Na2O. Calculate the relative molecular mass of dihydrogen monoxide. Chlorine has two isotopes, 75.0% of chlorine-35 and 25.0% of chlorine-37. Calculate the relative atomic mass of chlorine. The relative atomic mass of an atom is the average of mass of one atom of that element compared to 1/12 of the mass of one carbon-12 atom.
