Countries that were colonized by the French Empire had little to no power. Indigenous people were forced to conform to French ways. There was no choice but to assimilate and let the French conquer how they wish. The countries were no longer independent, only ruled by the French. They were manipulated and cheated in the trade business, forced to live with French societal values, and had very little say in their government. Thus not a very independent or free country.
Before: Africa Picture
A great deal of the previously French ruled countries, still speak French due to the assimilation in past years, like in Haiti for example. Most African countries' independence day is in or around thee 1960s. The influences of French imperialism are quite visible. These countries are commonly less developed than most due to the manipulation earlier. Some experienced major fall outs when the French drew back their control, causing extreme chaos and recession.
Africa isn't really Africa any more its more like a deformed mushed together image of other countries.

Causes of French Colonization
Some reasons being setting up trades posts to swap Slaves, gold, and diamonds. When the French bombarded Senegal they gained profits from selling objects such as watches, compass, lamps, umbrellas, etc. at a higher cost, making Senegal pay the price with gold, salt, leather, and other expensive objects. The French colony also traded slaves because the slaves had a lot of use to the French. The slaves did work such as farm work, plantation, mining, and acted as a scapegoat when the countries were at war. They had put the slaves on the front line as a shield. Also factories in Europe required raw materials to be manufactured into marketable products. So Europeans wanted both a source of raw materials, as well as, a market for manufactured goods in Africa. You could say the French were exploiting Africa because they were taking things from Africa and basically using them for their own selfish purposes.
The French wanted to claim and put a stake in Africa because Britain, Belgium, Spain, Portugal, Germany and The Netherlands were also competing for power over Africa.
While the French were taking over they also tried to assimilate any african people they came in contact with.
