on 13 September 2012#### Transcript of Lesson 1-4 Order of Operations

I can determine the order of operations

and perform computations. Numerical Expression:

An expression that contains only numbers and operations.

Evaluate:

To find the value of a numerical or algebraic expression.

Order of Operations:

A rule for evaluating expressions:

perform the operations in parentheses

compute powers and roots

perform all multiplication and division (left to right)

perform all addition and subtraction (left to right) Vocabulary to know: 9+ 12 x 2

9 + 24

33 Evaluate each expression 7 + (12 x 3) ÷ 6

7 + 36 ÷ 6

7 + 6

13 Another example: 3^3 + 8 - 16

27 + 8 - 16

35 - 16

19 This time with exponents 8 ÷ (1 + 3) x 5^2 - 2

8 ÷ 4 x 5^2 - 2

8 ÷ 4 x 25 - 2

2 x 25 - 2

50 - 2

48 Even more complicated Explain why 6 + 7 x 10 = 76

but (6 + 7) x 10 = 130 Food for thought: Tell how you can add parentheses to the numerical expression

2^2 + 5 X 3 so that 27 is the correct answer. Applying your new knowledge 1. White board time - yeah!!!!!

Evaluate the following expressions 1. 36 - 18 ÷ 6 Answer: 33 2. 7 + 24 ÷ 6 x 2 Here's the next one: And the answer is......

15 3. 62 - 4 x (15 ÷ 5) Ready...set....go: Did you get this one?

50 4. 11 + 2^3 x 5 How about this one: Did you get 51 as your answer? 5. 5 x (28 ÷ 7) - 4^2 Now try this one - they are getting tougher

but you can do it Well if you got 4 you are RIGHT. Last practice one .... are you ready? 6. 5 + 3^2 x 6 - (10 - 9) Did you think it would be an easy one The answer is ........... 58 - I knew you would get it. 7. Coach Milner fed the team after the game by buying 24 Chicken Deals for $4 each and 7 Burger Deals for $6 each. Evaluate 24 x 4 + 7 x 6 to find the cost of the food. Let try a story problem: oh nooooooooo mmmmmm.....burgers bet they came with fries.....oh you want the answer $138

That's a lot of money Your turn....without me But not alone - this time. You have 30 seconds to find a partner and a place to work, together complete numbers 8 through 21 on page 24. When you are done turn your papers in. C - 1-2 (we should hear the music)

H - ask 2 then me

A - Math

M - As needed to ask for help

P - Working on the task

S - SUCCESS!!!!!!! We can't forget the champ for this assignment
