Walk with People
- read Luke 10:1-12
Jesus Sent His Disciples on a Short-term Mission Trip
Where does Jesus send the 72 disciples?
Luke 10:1-12 (ESV), 1 After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them on ahead of him, two by two, into every town and place where he himself was about to go. 2 And he said to them, "The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. 3 Go your way; behold, I am sending you out as lambs in the midst of wolves. 4 Carry no moneybag, no knapsack, no sandals, and greet no one on the road. 5 Whatever house you enter, first say, 'Peace be to this house!' 6 And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest upon him. But if not, it will return to you. 7 And remain in the same house, eating and drinking what they provide, for the laborer deserves his wages. Do not go from house to house. 8 Whenever you enter a town and they receive you, eat what is set before you. 9 Heal the sick in it and say to them, 'The kingdom of God has come near to you.' 10 But whenever you enter a town and they do not receive you, go into its streets and say, 11 'Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet we wipe off against you. Nevertheless know this, that the kingdom of God has come near.' 12 I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom than for that town.
What do you think Jesus means when he says “the harvest is plentiful”? (v. 2)
What does Jesus tell his disciples to pray for and do? (vv. 2-4)
What particular blessings did Jesus ask his witnesses to bring to the people they meet? (vv. 5,9)
What was the basis on which his disciples were to judge whether to stay in or go from a particular place? (vv. 5-12)
- Jesus made the practice of
private prayer
an essential part of
his communion with the Father
Redemptive Relationships - A Description
- his passion was for
people
What is a redemptive relationship?
- it always has eternity in view
- it brings Jesus into our broken relationships
(healing and hope)
Prerequisites:
Building Redemptive Relationships
#1: walk under the Lordship of Jesus
- to be set apart to his values and his direction in our lives
- walking in proximity to other people
- their needs provide opportunities for expressing the love
and grace of Jesus
#2: Belong to a community of believers (corporate worship)
- Jesus joins us - he also sends us
- showing a sincere interest in others
Making Friends with Non-disciples
- hang out with people where they are comfortable
- change your approach from recruiting to inviting into a
relationship
- live carefully among people
“Go out on the street and make some friends.” (Harv Oostdyk, Young Life)
- look on people with compassion (patients to be healed)
What does this passage tell you about how Christ valued what his witnesses were offering to people?
- read the answer to prayer in Luke 10:17-20
- "There are some graces and blessings that God gives only in
'meeting together' with other believers." (Donald S. Whitney)
- the secret of worship - the joy of self-forgetfulness
How?
1. See the world as your mission field
2. See people as your focus
- invest yourself intentionally in the life of another person
- do this in such a way that he/she is drawn more closely to
Jesus Christ
- they matter to God who created all for eternity
- ask Jesus to give you a clear vision for people
- focus on a few people
