Identify pairs of complementary colors (e.g., yellow/violet; red/green; orange/blue) and discuss how artists use them to communicate an idea or mood. 2.5 Creative Expression:
Use accurate proportions to create an expressive portrait or a figure drawing or painting. 2.2 Creative Expression:
Use the conventions of facial and figure proportions in a figure study.
2.8 Creative Expression:
Use complementary colors in an original composition to show contrast and emphasis Colors and Techniques Van Gogh used complimentary colors in order to make the colors pop. Complimentary colors are across from each other on the color wheel:
Yellow and Violet
Orange and Blue
Red and Green Another technique Van Gogh used was to paint with either all cool colors or all warm colors. Warm colors are on the same side of the color wheel
Cool colors are Green, Blue and Violet
Warm colors are Yellow, Orange, and Red Self Portraits Activity Each student will be given an outline of a face and other materials to create their self portrait with. Use pairs of complimentary colors, or all warm or cool colors to make your self portarit express your mood or the way you view yourself.
