Effects of illness
1. IMPACT OF ILLNESS ON THE CLIENT/PATIENT


CLIENT/PATIENT – one who is suffering from disease, injury, an abnormal state or a mental disorder, and is engaged in related treatment.

2. IMPACT ON THE FAMILY
FAMILY – a group of persons united by ties of marriage, blood or adoption, consists of a single household, interacting and communicating with each other in their perspective social roles and maintaining a common culture.
When serious illness or disability strikes a person, the family as a whole is affected by the disease process and by the entire health care experience. Each person in the family plays a specific role that is part of the family’s everyday function; illness of a family member will disrupt the whole family.


a. PHYSICAL HEALTH OF THE CLIENT – the patient’s body condition will be affected, and so with how the body system work and how he cares for his body once he’s sick.
Example: Diabetes type 2:
>appearance – usually obese at diagnosis,
>system: increased insulin resistance,
>care to the body: additional routine like glucose monitoring and the need of weekly contacts with diabetic educators


b. MENTAL AND EMOTIONAL HEALTH – affectation of the condition of mind, expression of feelings, and the ability to manage stress or the ability to cope on the demands of illness. Example/s:
> If a patient is diagnosed with chronic illness patient may feel angry, denial, fear, confusion, blames oneself, exhaustion or feeling of helplessness,
> may feel useless and will loss self confidence by losing a job due to illness or injury
> Some patients will adhere to medication and treatment plan and some won’t be able to control their condition or illness.


c. FAMILY AND SOCIAL HEALTH – patients’ relationship to others may change, on how they will get along, how they care, their responsibilities as a family member and as a friend, also the way they show their respect for others is included in this aspect.
Example/s:
> a father who used to be the bread winner may no longer perform his responsibility due to heart attack, he may limit his social activities and there will be a change in lifestyle as well.

a. altered lifestyle and role adjustment
b. career development interruption
c. financial difficulty/problem
d. emotional and behavioral changes
e. social life alteration
f. family relationship interruption

ROLE OF THE INDIVIDUAL AND THE FAMILY IN HEALTH
AND ILLNESS
An individual belongs to a family, together they will work in maintaining health and in handling a family member's illness. They can love and support each other through good and difficult times.
