Transcript of 6.02 WASTE
Nearly everything we do leaves behind some kind of waste. Household create ordinary garbage, while industrial and manufacturing process create solid and hazardous waste.
In 2010, Americans produced about 4.3 pounds of waste per person per day.
WHAT EXTERNALITIES DOES THIS ISSUE RAISE?
The externalities of waste are numerous. Waste generates a lot of environmental problems, it can lead to water or soil contamination, pollution, leachate (liquid that forms as water trickles through contaminated areas), etc. and this later on can cause health problems.
HOW IS THE ISSUE CONNECTED TO POVERTY?
A city with poor sanitation, smelly and with waste matter all over the place to not attract good people, investors or tourists. Such cities tend to have poor living standards. If people would learn to reuse, reduce and recycle they would save a lot of money because we can always find a second use for almost everything and at the same time we would help to not keep contaminating our world.
WHAT HELPFUL ACTION CAN YOUR VIEWERS TAKE?
You can reduce the amount of waste you create by:
Buy only what you need
Buy products that can be reused
Buy products with little packaging
Sell or give away all unwanted items
Buy non-toxic products
Bring your own bag to go shopping instead of getting one every time you go.
Before you throw things away think about how they can be reused, like:
Scrap paper- can be used to make notes
Jars and pots: clean them and use them as containers
Donate old clothes and books
Use rechargeable batteries
Use a carrier bag when you go shopping instead of plastic bags.
You can recycle by:
Buy products that can be recycled.
Buy products that have been made from recycled products
Make sure you have a recycle bin in your home (and use it).
Community projects to get all the trash to recycling facilities
Recycle cans (you can sell them and get money from it)
