How it Works Ecosystem In A Bottle What is a Bottle Ecosystem? A bottle ecosystem is a scientific experiment where you make your own habitat for plants and animals in a bottle. The magic of it is that you never have to open it once, but all of the individual components contribute to the ecosystem so it manages to survive as if it was in nature. The most basic bottle ecosystem comprises of an aquatic plant, some small fish and soil submerged in water. You must place it in an area that is often exposed to sunlight so that the plant can grow and support the rest of the ecosystem. The Circle of Life Then the magic happens. The plant takes in sunlight, nutrients from the soil and the carbon dioxide that the fish breathes out and, by the way of a process called photosynthesis, converts those things into energy. The byproduct of this is oxygen, which the fish happily breathes in using the process of respiration, and then the fish breathes out carbon dioxide. The plant takes this in again, and the cycle repeats infinitely. The Components Key Concepts of an Ecosystem An ecosystem is, in its simplest sense, the connections between organisms. An ecosystem consists of two basic parts- biotic and abiotic factors. Biotic factors are parts of an ecosystem that are living, whereas abiotic factors are factors that are either dead or jut plain not living. Abiotic Factors Abiotic factors art the part of an ecosystem that are not living. These factors may seem insignificant, but they are vital to the ecosystem as a whole. Some examples might include wind, mountains, and water. These abiotic factors control the environment, and without them an ecosystem could not exist. Biotic Factors Biotic factors, on the other hand, are factors that are living. These factors are affected by the abiotic ones. They are the factors that define an ecosystem as we know it. They are the animals, the plants, the bacteria, the breath of life that gives our world beauty. These factors come in many shapes and sizes and do many different things, but they can be broken down into three main basic groups: Producers, Decomposers, and Consumers.
