Romans 8:16
Confirmed by
A Theology of Assurance
Lost People have Assurance
Matthew 7:21-23

“21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ 23 And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’”
Believers can lack Assurance
2 Peter 1:8-10

“8 For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 For whoever lacks these qualities is so nearsighted that he is blind, having forgotten that he was cleansed from his former sins. 10 Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent to confirm your calling and election, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall.”
Hebrews 10:22

“let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.”
Assurance is Available and Intended
We need to delight with God in the relational intimacy that sanctification develops between Him and us.

With God the Spirit, this relational intimacy is expressed in His confirmation that we are His children.

The Spirit and our Assurance
No Whispering Allowed
Romans 2:15

“They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them.”
Romans 9:1

“I am speaking the truth in Christ—I am not lying; my conscience bears me witness in the Holy Spirit.”
In the Context of Sanctification
Increasing Holiness
Philippians 2:13
“for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.”
Ongoing Struggle
Hebrews 12:4-8

“4 In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. 5 And have you forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons? “My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor be weary when reproved by him. 6 For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives.” 7 It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline? 8 If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons.”
The Spirit Testifying
“The Spirit’s witness is not a whisper in your ear, but a changed heart and a changed life.”
John Piper

Changed Affections
1 John 4:11-13

"11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us. 13 By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit."
Where are my Affections?
Do you share the intimacies of the Christian life with other believers?

Do you have a deep awareness of your sin against the Word and love of God?

Do you live in conscious obedience to the Word of God?

Do you long for the return of Jesus Christ and to be made like Him?

Do you habitually do what is right more and sin less?

Do you love Christians sacrificially and want to be with them?

Are these things true about you not just for a moment but as the overall pattern of your life over time?
