What Are Workplace Ethics?
A person’s moral ethics are developed during childhood and through adolescence and adulthood.
Learned through interaction with peers, family, mentors, and other significant people
Individual ethics will influence how they behave in the workplace because they internalize the values and norms that were instilled in them since they were a child.
Positive Workplace Ethics
It’s important to understand positive work ethic because doing so leads to working towards goals.
Negative Workplace Ethics
Negative work ethics can lower productivity, and the company would eventually lose most if not all of their profits.

According to ethics.org, 72% spend at least some time of their workday on social networking sites. 28% say such activity adds up to an hour or more of every workday. A third admit none of their activity is work related.

Before the 16th century, there were so many negative connotations with the thought of work, and was thought to be a curse set upon humans as a punishment for original sin by God.
Max Weber who was a German economic sociologist called the new beliefs the “Protestant ethics”.
The Importance of Workplace Ethics
It is important for people to understand why work place ethics are important. It can be detrimental to an entire organization if an unethical behavior becomes a norm within the organization.
Workplace ethics can not only be detrimental to those who are employed in the organization, but also the people who have stakes in the company such as stock holders and other outside groups.
Experts Opinion regarding Workplace Ethics
According to Resource Center’s 2000 National Business Ethics Survey (NBES), 90% of employees say that their organizations have a written and formal ethics program in place, but only 65% percent of these employees say that their employers provide training on these standards.
2 out of 5 employees experience misconduct but don't report.
Fear of being labled a "snitch"
Viewed as untrustworthy towards fellow co-workers
Organizations need to set a precedence that anyone who sees misconduct must report to keep the ethical behavior compliance at 100%.
Enhancing Workplace Ethics
Enhancing work place ethics is crucial to any organization that is striving to achieve its goals.
Code of Conduct:
Purpose: The ultimate goal for enhancing workplace ethics is so that everyone is on the same page and knows the values and principles that govern them.
Implementing ethical training and educational programs for employees ensures that the companies’ assets are protected, productivity and teamwork is emphasized, the public image remains intact, and decision-making is effective and direct.
A strong ethical culture within a firm ensures that all assets are protection
90 % of employees said it was a very unethical company.
Employees were indoctrinated by executives to cut as many corners to make a profit. One bad move after another and you create a culture top to bottom with unethical decisions.
In 2001 SEC received an avg. 6400 reports a month from "whistleblowers" reporting financial fraud.
CEO Kozlowski & CFO Swartz
Stole 120+ million in bonuses without approval from Tyco Directors.
Abused the employee loan program
Misrepresented the company’s financial condition to investors to boost the stock price while selling $575 million in stock
Pricewaterhousecoopers also got their "chunk" when they agreed to sign off on their fluffy numbers from Tyco
Ethics is an extremely important aspect of the workplace. Organizational ethics should always be at the forefront of employees’ minds when making decisions in a working environment.
