The history and forming of Pentatonix
Pentatonix is an American a Cappella group with five vocalist who use their creative melodies to create covers of existing songs as well as creating their own songs.
Pentatonix began with the original trio of Kristin Maldonado, Mitch Grassi, and Scott Hoying. The trio grew up together and were close friends all trough out high school
The Trio posted many videos of their melodies and covers on YouTube and were soon recognized for their cover of Telephone by Lady Gaga Ft. Beyoncè.
While at college, Scott joined another a cappella group called the SoCal where he learned about The Sing Off from another member. Scott contacted Mitch and Kristin to join together again to compete in a chance to win a recording deal with Sony.
After high school the trio went their separate ways to pursue college education
In their search the trio found Avriel "Avi" Kaplan, a highly recognized vocal bass in the a cappella community, through a mutual friend.
The trio then found Kevin Olusola through his videos on YouTube where in one of his videos he was simultaneously beat boxing and playing the cello at the same time which is commonly know as "celloboxing".
Pentatonix was now eligible to compete in The Sing Off now that they had five members in the group.
Pentatonix was now competely formed in 2011 and came into the public view later that year by winning the third season of
The Sing Off
on NBC.
Their victory on The Sing Off earned them $200,000 and a recording contract with Sony Music. After their contract with Sony expired Pentatonix started working with an independent record label through Madison Gate Records.
While working with Madison Gate Records, Pentatonix recorded 3 full length albums; PTX Vol. 1, 2, and 3; along with two Christmas CD's, PTXMas and That's Christmas To Me.
PTX Vol. 1 was released on June 26th, 2012. It was the first album that Pentatonix produced which included covers of popular pop hits at the time as well as some original songs written by members of the group.
