Australian Rules Football
Is a contact sport played all around the world. In Australia and New Zealand it is Associated as the NRL (National Rugby League). The NRL fields 16 teams; 10 from New South Wales, 3 from Queensland, 1 from Victoria, 1 from Australian Capital Territory, and 1 from New Zealand (NRL.com, 2014).
Cameron Smith is possibly the greatest player in the game today having won 3 grand finals, 8 series for QLD and 34 games for Australia. He also has a barrel of individual medals, including the “Dally M” for best player of the year in 2006. Cameron Smith is poised to be an “immortal” of the game, the highest honour in the NRL (Ferguson, 2014).
Todd Carney, a superstar of the game, was sacked by his club in June 2014 after vulgar images of him appeared on social media sites. This was not the first scandal surrounding Todd Carney and due to past indiscretions many believe his NRL career is over (Chammas & Walter, 2014).
State of Origin:
A three game series played between the 34 best NRL players; 17 from Queensland vs 17 from New South Wales. Often considered as the pinnacle of rugby league due to the intense rivalry and passion between states, it dates back to 1980. It is one of the biggest events on the rugby league calendar each year and is often sold out (Smith, 2014).

Soccer is a popular sport played between two teams of eleven players using a spherical ball. The game is played on a rectangular field with a goal on each end. The object of the game is to score by getting the ball into the opposing goal. Soccer is played in over 200 countries and is the most popular game in the world.
Messi is the top ranked soccer player and has been named World’s Best Player of the Year for four years running. He made his debut in the first division in October
2004 against Esponyol; since that day Barcelona adopted him as their greatest idol. Messi has proven his status by scoring goals in two of the three Champions League finals he won with Barcelona, leaving many in no doubt that he is the best player of his generation and possibly of all time.
Erik Cantona, a former Manchester United player, was sent off during a game in 1995. Frustrated at being sent off he took out his frustration by kung-fu kicking a fan. He was suspended for the season, spent 7 days in jail and was given a heavy fine. (CBS News 2014)
Is played every four years in a different country each time. The World Cup was first played in 1930, 1934 and 1938 before stopping for the first world war. It restarted in 1950 in Brazil who are the only country to compete in every World cup final.

Artistic Gymnastics is a discipline of Gymnastics. It combines strength, grace, technical skill and balance.
There are six events for Men (Floor Exercise, Pommel Horse, Still Rings, Vault, Parallel Bars, and High Bar), and four events for Women (Vault, Uneven Bars, Balance Beam, and Floor Exercise).

In 1976 at the Montreal Olympics, Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci made history as the first Gymnast to score a 'perfect 10' for her routine on the uneven bars. In 2000 Comaneci was named one of the athletes of the century by the Laureus World Sports Academy (CNN, 2008).
Gymnastics has been an Olympic Event since its inception in 1896 (Olympic.org, 2013). Apart from the Olympics, other major Artistic Gymnastics events include annual country based championships, and a one world championship match held in October.
Artistic Gymnastics has been rocked with a number of scandals including the vault being the wrong height at the 2000 Olympics, questions around the ages of competitors and in 2004 there were issues with judging on the men's rings (Deusen, 2014).
Swimming first emerged as a competitive sport in England in the 1830s and became part of the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 (Jude, 2010). FINA recognises four strokes; freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly (FINA, 2014).

Pan Pacific Swimming Championships:
A long course swimming event first held in 1985 (Pan Pacific Master Games, 2014). The meet is a quadrennial event, held between the Summer Olympics (Pan Pacific Master Games, 2014).
Banned by FINA, 'super suits' are made of polyurethane and increase the wearers buoyancy (Welle, 2009). In the two years before their ban in 2010, nearly 300 world records were broken by swimmers wearing the 'super suits' (BBC, 2011).
Dawn Fraser is regarded as one of Australia’s greatest Olympians (Fraser, 2007). She is a multi-Olympic and Commonwealth Games Gold Medal winner. Her career lasted 15 years, during which she held 41 World records and was undefeated over 100 metres freestyle three consecutive Olympics in a row (Fraser, 2007).
A uniquely Australian sport first played in 1858 in Melbourne, Victoria (AFL, 2014). It has the largest supporter base of all sports within Australia (Kwek, 2013).
Gary Ablett Junior is
undoubtedly the greatest player of his generation having won two Brownlow Medals, five Club Best and Fairest awards, the AFL Players Association MVP award five times, the AFL Coaches Association Player of the Year Award three times, named All Australian seven times and has won two Premierships.

ANZAC Day Clash:
The brainchild of Kevin Sheedy, the match between Essendon and Collingwood was established to commemorate those who fought in both World Wars. It has grown to become the most anticipated home and away game of the year (Essendonfc, 2014).
In 2012 the AFL integrity unit investigated the Melbourne Football Club for tanking in several games during the 2009 season (Ralph, 2011).
As a result of the investigation the club was cleared of wrongdoing, however sanctions were handed out to the Coach and the General Manager of Football Operations for acting in a manner prejudicial to the interests of the competition (Wilson, 2013).
