What are learner needs?
Needs which influence a learners' learning.
Can be personal, such as praise or need to become more fluent.
Or professional, such as a need to give presentations in English.
Include security, challenge, support, praise, goals, learning expectations, etc.
Are specific ways of learning, specific target language, specific language subskills, exam strategies, learner autonomy and working at a suitable level.
(Future) Professional needs
Specific subskills, vocabulary and grammar.
Specific functions and text types.
Learners needs can affect things related to their learning, like which methods or approaches they like the TEACHER to use.
Being a good teacher
and trying to meet
interests, motivation, educational background
-Past learning experience.
-Learning gap (btw present lvl and target lvl).
-Learning goals & expectations.
-Level of skill and knowledge.
-Availability of time.
Professional language requirements for employment, training or education.
To meet learners' needs different kinds of courses are provided.
CLIL or Content and Language Integrated Learning (having subjects in English) helps to motivate learners, making their course more relevant to them.
Younger learners have a particular need for praise and play, while teenage learners may have a need for more autonomy and recognition of their individuality.
Adult learners need their professional needs met, studying at a English medium-high uni or finding a new job.
Learners may also have special needs such as dealing with dyslexia, etc.
Teachers cannot meet ALL of their learners' needs ALL the time, making use of variety of lessons can help.
