CHARACTERISTICS OF LIFE!!
Transcript of CHARACTERISTICS OF LIFE!!
WHAT ARE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF LIFE?
Stimuli: anything in the environment rhat causes a reaction by an organism
Response: the reaction to the stimuli
ALL organisms respond to stimuli
Living things require energy (FOOD!!) to survive
ALL organisms require energy to function
HOMEOSTASIS: the bodys ability to regulate (control) internal conditions necessary for life
ALL living things maintain homeostasis
Adaptation: inherited characteristic that that results from changes to a species over time
ALL living things adapt to their environment and conditions
The cell is the basic unit of life. All living things are made up of at least one cell.
All living things are made of cells
Animals, plants, fungi, ALL living things are organized. Starting at the smallest level with atoms all the way up to organs and systems. EACH structure has a specific function.
All organisms display organization
Growth: increase in mass (organism gets bigger)
Devlopment: increase in complexity
ALL organisms grow AND develop
All living things are capable of reproducing and passing traits to offspring.
ALL organisms reproduce
SPECIES: a group of organisms that can breed with one another AND produce fertile offspring
QUESTION: WHAT IS A SPECIES?
Let's play: NAME THAT RESPONSE!!!
hand on hot stove
lack of water (thirsty)
plant senses light
2 degrees outside
cute girl in the hallway
Plants require energy in the form of sunlight
Your main source of ENERGY: GLUCOSE!!!!
Examples: maintaining body temp, blood sugar levels, blood pressure, amount of water in plants
Question: The horse and the donkey have
successfully produced offspring. But they
are two different species. Why?????
Where is the energy stored?
