Mauryan and Gupta Empires
Comparing and Contrasting: Location, Social Structure, Religion, and Government.
Mauryan and Gupta Locations
The Gupta Empire inherited the Mauryan land which was located in modern day India. The main difference between these two empires is that the Gupta Empire had a less extensive area. The Mauryan land extended from the top of modern day India to nearly the bottom of the penninsula. On the other hand, the Gupta land was confind to the top part.
Mauryan Social Structure
Classes were determained by occupation rather than family or birth. These classes included philosophers, farmers, soldiers, herdsmen, craftsmen, and magistrates. Women enjoyed high status as well and were shown a lot of respect. Also, there was no slavery.
Religion
Mauryan Religion
Hinduism was the prominent religion at this time. But after the leader of Maurya converted to Buddhism, it became the main religion of this area.
Gupta Religion
Like the Mauryan religion, the Gupta empire embraced Hinduism at the beginning of their civilization. Later on they switched to Buddhism which was the reason for the fall of the Gupta Empire.
Gupta Social Structure
Like the Mauryan Empire, the Gupta social classes were determained by profession but they had different names. These classes were broken into the Brahmans (working men), Vaishayas (rulers), Kshatriyas, and Sudras. Unlike the Mauryan, the Gupta men had higher ranking than women and women were expected to obey men.

Gupta Government
The imperial government center was located in Pataliputra and the Maurya believed it was important for a strong central government. The empire was divided into four different provinces for organizational and ruling purposes. Councils had quite a lot of authority but the highest ruler was the Emperor.
Like the Mauryan government, the Gupta government was centered around Emperors and it was divided into provinces and districts. The government was based on public participation and women were originally allowed to serve on councils.
Mauryan and Gupta Economy
Mauryan Economy
Their economy is based around trade and some of their main exports were silk, textiles, spices, and exotic foods. Also, the Mauryan Empire was in a state of tranquility which made internal trade prosperous.
Gupta Economy
Unlike the Mauryan economy, the Gupta was based around a lot of agriculture. However, their trade and commerce was steadily growing, much like the Mauryan trade. During this time, the textile industry was a huge part of trade and the economy of the Gupta Empire.
Literature
Mauryan Literature
During this time period, there weren't very many literary achievements. However, those found were of great importance and were written in the Sanskrit or Prakritor Pali languages.
Gupta Literature
Unlike the Mauryan Empire, literature was written extensively, especially narratives. Some of the most famous types were fables and tales. Poetry and romantic comedies.
Mauryan Technology
Mauryan technology included irrigation for land that didn't receive enough water as well as machines that ran on water and wind. They were also able to create many new roads and roads that connected land over swampy areas.
Gupta Technology
Like the Mauryan, the Gupta used irrigation to grow crops. People lived in two story buildings. The top level was for houses, and the bottom was for shops. Medical science also flourished during this time period.
