In 1898, in Paris, France, Marie Sklodowska and Perre Curie discovered radium. They discovered it when researching a mixture of elements called pitchblende.
Radium was used in medicines to treat diseases such as cancer and was also used for x-rays, but since it was so expensive, it was rarely used. It was also used to make aircraft instrument dials. A really popular use was to make glow in the dark watch and clock faces, which was made by mixing the radium with phosphor. Today radium is used in the treatment of only a few types of cancer; it is enclosed in a sealed tube and inserted in the diseased tissue.
