WhatsApp
Acquired on February 19, 2014 for $19 billion.
WhatsApp makes a popular smartphone application that allows users of various devices, such as iPhones, Blackberry’s , and phones running Android, to send texts and photographs seamlessly and without paying the additional fees carriers charge for SMS messages.
The acquisition positions the company for even stronger growth on mobile phones, where advertising now makes up the majority of its revenue.

Oculus VR
Acquired for $2 billion on March 25, 2014.
Oculus VR is a startup that makes virtual reality headset devices that makes you feel as if you are truly immersed into a virtual environment.
Facebook plans to extend Oculus' existing advantage in gaming to new verticals, including communications, media and entertainment, education and other areas.

Given the acquisition of WhatsApp and Oculus VR, Facebook will need to increase personnel in order to keep up with product demand.

Facebook likes to say that they have one software engineer per one million users. In considering that the social network has over 1 billion users, we can determine that for 2014, Facebook will need about over 1,000 software engineers to manage the growth of the both the newly acquired products and the continuous growth of Facebook.

Communication

College vibe

While a sophomore at Harvard, Mark Zuckerberg wrote a program called Facemash on October 28, 2003.
Shortly after its release, Facemash was shut down by the Harvard administration.
Inspired by an editorial about the incident regarding Facemash in The Harvard Crimson, Zuckerberg began writing code for a new website called the Facebook.
In 2005, the company dropped the from the domain name and became Facebook as we know it today.
