Pretty Little Liars is an American teen drama mystery-thriller television series loosely based on the popular series of novels by Sara Shepard. The show premiered on ABC Family on June 8th 2010. The success ratings of season one led to the book series being extended beyond the original eight novels. It has had three seasons and the fourth season is currently airing.
The series is set in the fictional town of Rosewood, Pennsylvania and follows the lives of four girls whose clique falls apart after the disappearance of their queen bee, Alison. A year after her disappearance, the girls begin receiving anonymous messages from a mysterious figure who signs off as "A" and threatens to
expose all of their secrets. At first, they suspect that it may be
Alison, but then her body is found, making them think that someone has been watching them for some time now. Flashbacks throughout the series' reveal to the viewers, and make the girls aware that "A" also stalked Alison. As the series continues, the girls continue to discover more and more information about "A" and Alison's disappearance, all while risking their lives.
Spencer Hastings (played by Troian Bellisario) is the smartest of the group. She's a perfectionist who is always trying to please her wealthy parents who clearly show more affection towards her older sister, Melissa. Spencer had been the only person brave enough to stand up to Alison.
In season 3, she joins the "A" Team (in season 2 we find out that A had not been working alone) to find out more about Red Coat (a suspicious figure that the girls keep seeing who they suspect to be the leader of the "A" Team), and to find out where her boyfriend Toby is, as she had previously found what appeared to be his body in the woods.
Hanna Marin (played by Ashley Benson) is the 'it' girl of the group who struggles with self-image issues. She was the 'loser' of the group while Alison
was alive, but transformed herself into the most
popular girl in school, along with her best friend, Mona Vanderwaal (who is an outsider to the group). She falls in love with Caleb Rivers, a phone hacker and new Rosewood resident.
Aria Montgomery (played by Lucy Hale) is the groups 'artsy girl' who returns to Rosewood after spending a year in Iceland with her family, to hear the news of Alison's body being found. At a bar, she meets Ezra Fitz and kisses him, only to discover on her first day of school that he is her english teacher. However, they still continue their relationship secretly, before eventually making their romance public. Due to complications in season 3, Ezria break up :(
Most of Aria's storyline involves her love life.
Emily Fields (played by Shay Mitchell) is the groups 'jock girl' who loves all things sport, especially swimming. Emily was closest to Alison before her disappearance and was also in love with her. Emily originally kept her sexuality a secret before being pressured by "A" to reveal it. She also falls in love with and dates Maya St. Germain (who moved into the Dilaurentis house when they left). Maya is killed as a result of an "A" plot. Emily is left distraught, but in season 3 begins to date her fellow teammate on the swim team, Paige McCullers.
Alison Dilaurentis (played by Sasha Pieterse) was former "Queen Bee" of her clique and most popular girl in school before her disappearance and subsequent death. Although she cared for her friends, she enjoyed using their deepest secrets against them in order to keep them in line. Many people hated her because she was charming and manipulative and was skilled at finding ways to blackmail everyone. Her disappearance took place a year prior to the beginning of the series, after which her body is found. The shows main plot revolves around the mystery of Alison's murder. Towards the end of season 3, it is revealed that she is supposedly alive and is 'Red Coat'- the leader of the "A" team.
Mona Vanderwaal (played by Janel Parrish) is a former unpopular girl at Rosewood who longed to be accepted into Alison's group and was continuously mocked by Alison. After Alison's disappearance, Mona befriended Hanna and they underwent an 'extreme makeover' which landed them popularity. In the season 2 finale 'UnmAsked', Mona is revealed to apparently be "A", acting in revenge for the liars taking Hanna, her only friend, away from her. It is later revealed that she is part of an "A" team. Mona is emitted to the mental hospital 'Radley Sanatarium' in season 3. In the season finale 'A dAngerous gAme', it is revealed that Mona is now being targeted by "A". As of season 4, Mona is part of the PLL team with Hanna, Spencer, Aria and Emily.
The second season continues from the
season finale of the previous season, in
which Ian Thomas, Spencer's brother-
in-law, is presumed to have been killed
in an incident at the top of a bell tower
but is also accused of murdering Alison.
Could he be "A"?
This season of PLL
takes place five months following
the discovery that Mona was the "A" that had been creatively and relentlessly
tormenting the four girls for the past year. The first half of the season addresses the issue of whether or not Garrett Reynolds actually killed or was involved in the murder of Alison Dilaurentis and who killed Maya St. Germain in the season 2 finale, while the second half deals with the reveal of another "A" and the fallout, while the mysterious Red Coat stalks the girls.
This season of PLL continues immediately after the events of the season 3 finale, where Hanna, Aria, Emily and Mona were rescued by the mysterious 'Red Coat' on the night of the lodge fire. Season 4 will continue to focus on Alison's disappearance and heavily address the question of whether or not shes still alive. With the deconstruction of the "A" Team consisting of Mona, Spencer (briefly), and Toby Cavanaugh, the mysterious 'Red Coat', the all- seeing "A", and possibly new "A" Team expand their target as they begin tormenting the parents of the PlLLs. New characters are introduced whose primary motives are to investigate the murders of Garrett Reynolds and Detective Wilden, to determine whether there is a link between these murders and Alison's disappearance.
The Pretty Little Liars is loosely based on the series of novels by Sara Shepard. There are 13 Books in the Pretty Little Liars set;
Each Pretty Little Liars Season is around 4-5 books long. Sara Shepard has written 14 books for the collection, however only 13 books have been released. The fourteenth book, Deadly, is set to be released in December 2013. Shepard revealed in June 2013 that she will be writing another 3 books for the series, the names of these books have not yet been leaked. Not everything in the tv series has been the same as the books. Although many PLL fans
have theories about what will happen throughout the rest
of the show because of the books. Like the most popular 'twin theory'.
Ali has a twin named Courtney. Courtney and Ali are both still alive and Ali is mental. Plus, no one who knew Ali identified her body, her parents just said "the yellow top was enough" but anyone could've had the same top as Ali. I also think that Ali was the one who was buried because, as we see in the flashback she could hold her breath for ages xxxxxx
[Credit to Lyd R and Lyd F for thinking up this theory
I think that, the twin theory is true, but I'm not sure about it. My own theory is that maybe the body that they thought was Ali was possibly a look alike because nobody actually saw it; maybe it was wearing one of the Ali masks she had made to look just like her that the A Team keep wearing and that the girls found out
about in season 4.
Evidence to support the twin theory
The title sequence, and something that is said by Alison is 'two can keep a secret if one of them is dead', could this possibly point to the twin theory? Who are the 2 people keeping secrets if there are 4 girls?
Season 2, Episode 14- In a flashback, Alison tells a story about two twin girls, one kills the other and then Alison finishes the story by saying "She was sent away to a home for the criminally insane, where she remained until yesterday!" Then the scene changes and a car pulls up labelled "Radley Sanatarium" which is the mental home in Rosewood. Why would the car appear after the words criminally insane? Who was in that car?
Also, in one of the episodes in season 3, when Spencer is in Radley, she thinks she sees Alison. Alison says to her "Oh Honey, you didn't even know me when you knew me" could she be suggesting that sometimes the girls were talking to Alison, and other times Courtney? Could she be hinting that the liars never realised that their friend was a twin when the clues were right infront of them?
What's next for Pretty Little Liars?
On March 26th 2013, ABC Family picked
up Pretty Little Liars for a fifth season and
also announced that a spin off,
Ravenswood, would air in October 2013.
