Transcript of Chemical vs Natural Sunscreens

DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE PUTTING ON YOUR
BODY WHILE IN THE SUN?
CHEMICAL VS NATURAL SUNSCREENS

UVB RAYS ARE PRIMARILY ACCEPTED AS THE CAUSE OF CANCER IN THE MAINSTREAM

MOST SUNSCREENS ONLY PROTECTCT AGAINST UVB

UVA RAYS CAUSE CANCER
MOST SUNSCREENS DO NOT SCREEN OUT

TYPES OF ULTRA-VIOLET RADIATION

Deaths from Melanoma exceeded 6,700 in 1992,
and that number is increasing as well.
In the year 2000 projections indicated that ...
There would be 1.3 million cases of Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer and 1900 people would die.
There would be 48,000 new cases of Melanoma Cancer and
7700 people would die

FACTS ABOUT SUNSCREEN

On a cloudy day, 80% of Ultraviolet light passes through the clouds.
The sun's reflective powers are great -- 17% on sand, 35% on water and 80% on snow.
UVB is responsible for Vitamin D production in the skin.
SPF numbers only pertain to a product's screening ability for UVB.
SPF Myth: Many people believe that an SPF 2 means that 2 hours equals one in the sun;
that an SPF 15 means 15 hours equals one in the sun. SPF numbers indicate how much your time in the sun can be multiplied before sun burning.

PROTECT SKIN FROM THE SUN BY DEFLECTING OR BLOCKING UV RAYS

OTHER NAMES: SUNBLOCK; INORGANIC; MINERAL
UV FILTERS: TITANIUM DIOXIDE (TiO2) ZINC OXIDE (ZnO)

GENERALLY STABLE

MOSTLY NON-COMEDOGENIC (NON PORE CLOGGING)

PROTECTS IMMEDIATELY, BROAD SPECTRUM

TEXTURE IS THICK AND OPAQUE, LEAVES A WHITE CAST OR TINT.

MUST BE FREQUENTLY APPLIED
FDA APPROVED

NO FREE RADICALS (CANCER CAUSING INGREDIENTS)

NATURAL
(PHYSICAL SUNSCREENS)

OTHER UV FILTERS BANNED BY FDA

PARA-AMINOABENZOIC ACID (PABA)
KNOWN CARCINOGEN

OCTYIMETHOXCINNAMATE (OM)
JAPAN HAS BANNED CAUSES CELL MUTATIONS, PHOTOALLERGIC EFFECTS, LIVER EFFECTS , WILDLIFE AND ENVIRONMENTAL TOXICITY

CHEMICAL SUNSCREENS

THE FDA PUT A BAN ON CERTAIN INGREDIENTS WHICH ARE LINKED TO
CANCER
OR OTHER ENDOCRINE DISRUPTIONS

BENZOPHENON-3 (BZ3) OR OXYBENZONE.
FOUND IN SUNSCREEN MOISTURIZER, LIP BALM AND CHILDREN’S SUNSCREEN. DIRECT CAUSATION OF LEUKOCYTOSIS, ANEMIA AND REDUCTION OF ORGAN WEIGHT.

BENZOPHENON3-2 (BZ2):
SEEN IN FRAGRANCE LINKED TO HORMONAL DISRUPTION IN HUMANS AND ANIMALS EUROPE HAS BANNED THIS INGREDIENT

CHEMICAL SUNSCREENS

WORK BY ABSORBING THE SUN’S RAYS

OTHER NAMES: ORGANIC

MOST USE CANCER CAUSING INGREDIENTS TO FILTER UV RADIATION

USUALLY CLOG PORES AND CAN BE IRRITATING TO THE SKIN

TEXTURE IS COLORLESS, ODORLESS, USUALLY RUNNY

CAN GENERATE FREE RADICALS WHICH CAN CAUSE SKIN DAMAGE AND AGING

MUST WAIT 20 MINUTES AFTER APPLICATION FOR PROTECTION TO BEGIN.

MANY UV FILTER NOT APPROVED BY FDA IN US

CHEMICAL SUNSCREENS

REAPPLY SUNSCREENS FREQUENTLY!

DON'T RUB IT IN!

TAKE FREQUENT SHADE BREAKS!

KEEP SKIN MOISTURIZED WHILE IN THE SUN!

NEVER EXPOSE BURNED SKIN TO MORE SUN!

DON'T TRY TO SLAM-DUNK A TAN!

CONDITION YOUR SKIN BEFORE AND AFTER SUN EXPOSURE!

COOL IT! AFTERSUN

CARDINAL RULES ABOUT SUNTANNING

In the year 2001, the American Academy of Dermatology estimated that ...

There would be 51,400 Americans diagnosed with Melanoma
- the deadliest form of skin cancer.

It also projected that melanoma would cause 7,800 deaths in 2001
There will be 48,000 new cases of Melanoma Cancer and
7700 people will die.

Please be smart, use protection and don't become a statistic

FACTS ABOUT SUNSCREEN

A nanometre is the unit of measurement for Ultraviolet wavelengths.
UVA intensity is consistent year-round and on cloudy days.
UVA penetrates the epidermis; UVB does not.
There were
400,000 cases of skin cancer
in 1987,
and the number is increasing annually

FACTS ABOUT SUNSCREEN

OTHER PROBLEMS SEEN:

NON-COMEDOGENIC (CLOGGING PORES)
LEADS TO INCREASING CORE TEMPERATURE CAUSING HEAT STROKE AND MIIIARIA RUBRA (PRICKLEY HEAT)

CHEMICAL SUNSCREENS

OTHER CANCERS CAUSING INGREDIENTS NOT BANNED BY THE FDA:

AVOBENZONE
OCTINOXATE
HOMOSALATE
HELIOPLEX
OCTISALATE
4-MBC
MEXORYL SX AND XL
TINOSORB S AND M
UVINUL T 150
UVINUL A PLUS

TYPES OF ULTRA-VIOLET RADIATION

"GLOBAL WARMING SEEMS TO BE INFLUENCING TODAY'S CLIMATE, MORE HEAT BRINGS MORE CASES OF HEAT CRAMPS, HEAT EXHAUSTION, AND HEAT STROKE."
(PHYSICIANS FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY, 2001, P.5)

"IN MILDLY SUNBURNT SKIN, SWEAT CAN BE TRAPPED AND ACCUMULATE UNDER THE DEAD SURFACE LAYER AND CAUSE DISCOMFORT AS WELL AS REDUCING EVAPORATIVE EFFICIENCY"
"MILIARIA RUBRA OR PRICKLY HEAT IS CHARACTERIZED BY PROFUSE TINY RAISED RED VISICLES (BLISTER-LIKE) ON AFFECTED AREAS, PRICKING SENSATIONS DURING HEAT EXPOSURE."
(PARSONS, 2009, P. 2,5)
NON-COMEDOGENIC SUNSCREENS
CHEMICAL BLOCKS PORES
NATURAL DOES NOT
NATURAL SUNSCREENS ARE A HEALTHIER CHOICE AND CAN HELP PREVENT THE COMPLICATIONS OF BLOCKED PORES WHICH LEAD TO PRICKLY HEAT AND ALSO DO NOT CONTAIN THE CANCER CAUSING INGREDIENTS FOUND IN THE CHEMICAL SUNSCREENS.
