R.A.C.E
R.A.C.E is a strategy to aid in citing information from the text.
"R" is for Restate
Restate the question.
Cross off the question word and write it as a statement.


"A" is for answer
Answer the question
Make an inference based on the text.


"C" is for Citing
Cite evidence from the text to support your inference.
Use a direct quote

Transition phrases:

According to the text,
The author states,

It is important to use information from the text to support your position when answering questions.
Example
What is the theme of the text?

The theme of the text is hard work has its rewards.
John, the star quarterback, practices frequently.

According to the text, John practiced "day and night" as well as "ran around the football field on weekends."

"E" is for Explain
Explain how the quote and evidence you used support your inference
