All Downhill from Here
Purpose of Day 7: living in the rest of God by the strength of God.
Day 7
“Come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light.”
Matthew 11:28-30 ESV
"And He said to them, ‘The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.”
Mark 2:27 ESV
"The narrative has two peaks, mankind and the Sabbath. …Mankind crowns the work, but the sabbath is its supreme goal. …It relativizes the works of mankind, the contents of the six working days. It protects mankind from total absorption by the task of subduing the earth, it anticipates the distortion which makes work the sum and purpose of human life, and it informs mankind that he will not fulfill his humanity in his relation to the world which he is transforming but only when he raises his eyes above, in the blessed, holy hour of communion with the Creator. …It refers [man] back to his most essential relationship, that with God. That is the message of the sabbath."
Henri Blocher
“And He said, ‘My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.’"
Exodus 33:14 ESV
“…He is our God, and we are the people of His pasture, and the sheep of His hand. Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts, as at Meribah, as on the day at Massah in the wilderness, when your fathers put Me to the test and put Me to the proof, though they had seen My work. For forty years I loathed that generation and said, ‘They are a people who go astray in their heart, and they have not known My ways.’ Therefore I swore in My wrath, ‘They shall not enter My rest.’”
Psalm 95:7-11 ESV
“Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”
Hebrews 4:14-16 ESV
“Blessed are the poor in spirit. For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
Matthew 5:3
“Now to the one who works, his wages are not counted as a gift but as his due. And to the one who does not work but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness….”
Romans 4:4-5 ESV
“I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.”
Philippians 4:12-13 ESV
"So God finished by the seventh day His work which He did,
And He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He did,
And God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it,
Because on it He rested from all His work which God created to do."
