What is Mobile App
Development? The Obvious Answer:
The development of mobile applications for tablets, phones, iDevices, etc. More Thoughtfully:
“Mobile application development is the set of processes and procedures involved in writing software for small, wireless computing devices such as smartphones or tablets.” (www.whatis.com) Relatively new,
as smartphones
and tablets are
relatively new. Apps can be
very versatile They can be
very helpful
and entertaining Or make you
question why you
spent that dollar > Wow! That's awesome!
What's the catch? Like software and web
development, but on
a tiny touchscreen Unlike other types
of development, app
development is
painfully specific Native Development Browser Based Applications Screen Economy - Every pixel counts Publishing
Decisions How will the
app be monetized? Paid? It has to be worth the asking
price; on average, consumers pay
pay an average of no more than $3 In-App Purchases? Free apps with ad revenue? Which Store? Apple's App Store Google's Play Store Pros: Probably the largest
of all app stores Largest selection
of apps Many free apps Reasonably priced
cost for apps Cons: Only the most
get featured iTunes is getting
more and more
restrictive Pros: Over 250,000 Apps Low developer's
fee of $25 Low cost of
apps Great categorization
of apps Cons: App quality varies Only 29 supported
countries Fragmented
market Other things to consider: Approval with Apple
can take up to 3 weeks Web services do exist
that can help prime an
app for distribution. App Stores/
Sites The standard way of
distributing apps Recommendation
sites recommend apps
based on similar apps
the user already has Helps advertise when
app store promotions
are based on sales figures Preloaded Apps Consumers will ALWAYS
see the preloaded apps. Even if it's just a demo,
consumers are likely to
buy the full version. Optimize Search Results Make it easier for the
user by redirecting
download links to
their appropriate device i.e. If someone tries
to download Skype on
a PC, direct them to
the PC version; on iOS,
direct them to the iOS
version, etc. Press Review Reviews from
the media bring in
more publicity by
word of mouth No publicity is
bad publicity! Piggyback off
other apps Advertises your app
and gives users of
another app incentive
to try your app! Similar logic to
pre-loading apps App giveaways
and discounts Create a mobile
web version Coding an app in HTML5
and uploading to the web
can help see which platforms
access the app the most TV Commercials More and more useful apps
are being created daily,
so the question is: Where
is the future heading? It seems to be the full integration of: Cloud networks Behavioral trending Improved vocal recognition Cloud Networks are the
constant communication
and sharing of resources
between devices via
internet connection. Voice Recognition technology will make for easier operation for the users. Users buy for convenience and demand easier and easier experiences. Our lives could soon revolve around tiny computers that know every little thing about us and make our lives much, much easier. Works Cited: http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p8/knyte6426/dynatac.jpg
