Drugs - drug: a substance that has a
physiological effect when ingested or otherwise introduced into the body - illicit: forbidden by law, rules,
or custom There are 3 main
subcategories of drugs,
based on their effects:
- stimulants
- depressants
- hallucinogens - stimulant: a substance that
raises levels of physiological or
nervous activity in the body - depressant: a substance that reduces functional or nervous activity of the body - hallucinogen: a substance that produces hallucinations - 9.1% of Canadians used cannabis
(12.2% of males, 6.2% of females,
21.6% of youths aged 15-24)
- 4.8% of youths aged 15-24 used at
least one of these:
crack/cocaine, meth, hallucinogens,
ecstasy, and heroin - 22.5 million Americans aged 12 and
older used illicit drugs
- 18.1 million used cannabis (7.0%)
- 6.1 million abused prescription drugs
- 1.4 million used cocaine (and there
were 400,000 emergency room visits
