Bi-Polar Disorder BY: Michelle Tamondong What Happens in The Nervous System That Causes People to Have This Mental Illness? How does it affect Canadians and young people today? Treatments What is it and what happens? It is a mental illness that causes people to have dramatic mood swings. People with bipolar disorder tend to have episodes of mania, depression and long periods of time when they have a normal mood. They can go from being very happy to very depressed very fast. People with this mental illness can take medication such as an anti-depressants, anti-anxiety medication, anti-psychotics, and mood stabilizers. They can also change their lifestyle and go to psychotherapy. It is said that bipolar disorder is caused by chemical imbalance in the brain and because of your genes. Functions in the brain begin to change which leaves a person with periods of mania, depression, and sometimes a long period of time having normal mood. Bipolar disorder affects about 10% of Canadians and young people today. It is very hard to live with bipolar disorder because you never know when you will have a manic episode or when you will have these dramatic mood swings and when you get these episodes and dramatic mood swings its hard to control yourself. Its hard for a person with this mental illness because they can go into a stage of depression for a long period of time and then all of a sudden be happy again .
