"... her voice reminded me for a minute of what heroin feels like sometimes- when it's in your veins. It makes you feel... distant. And- and sure... It makes you feel- in control. Sometimes you've got to hold onto that feeling" (197).
"No, there's no way not to suffer. But you try all different ways to keep from drowning in it..." (209).
The narrator said, "Tell me... why does he want to die? He must want to die, He's killing himself, why does he want to die?" (39). The man from their childhood responded, "He don't want to die. He wants to live" (40).

Mama tells narrator story about his father's brother; warns narrator to watch out for Sonny- "And the world ain't changed" (102).
