rules and best practices
Don't want to get legalistic

Don't judge others over best practices
Proverbs

3.9-10 honor the Lord with your wealth…
11.4 riches do not profit in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death
11.24 One gives freely, yet grows all the richer; another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want.

Best Practices in the Bible
Physical Exercize
:
I Timothy 4.8: bodily training is of some value...

Do not take offense

Proverbs 19:11 Good sense makes one slow to anger, and it is his glory to overlook an offense.

Giving in the Bible
Exodus:

God was starting a nation from scratch.
Taught them to tithe as a lifestyle
Building up a best practice, a habit of tithing, so that when they came into the land of milk & honey, it was a no-brainer.

Think of giving as a good habit, a best practice. It will benefit you a lot more than it will benefit God.
like the Sabbath
Don’t drink too much alcohol
: Proverbs 20:1 Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler, and whoever is led astray by it is not wise.

Have a DQT
Acts 17.11
Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.
11.28 whoever trusts in his riches will fall, but the righteous will flourish like a green leaf.

13.8 The ransom of a man’s life is his wealth, but a poor man hears no threat.
Malachi 3. 8-12
Will man rob God? Yet you are robbing me. But you say, ‘How have we robbed you?’ In your tithes and contributions. You are cursed with a curse, for you are robbing me, the whole nation of you. Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need. I will rebuke the devourer[a] for you, so that it will not destroy the fruits of your soil, and your vine in the field shall not fail to bear, says the Lord of hosts. Then all nations will call you blessed, for you will be a land of delight, says the Lord of hosts.
Matthew 6.19-34
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust[a] destroy and where thieves break in and steal, 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
...

24 “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.[b]

31 Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33
But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

34 “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

7 “Judge not, that you be not judged.
The Bible provides many reasons to develop the best practice of giving:
Required in the OT
Jesus said we should tithe
Develops financial discipline
Tangible way to train your heart
Thwarts your materialistic urges

There's a bungee cord that holds your heart near your treasure -- not vice versa.
If we all gave all our gifts to FCBC, we’d have too much
ten men carrying a log…
responsibility to “invest” your money wisely for the kingdom
you can know personally some of the people who you’re investing in:
overseas missions:
evangelism: IVCF, YWAM
poor: MOM, food pantries
education: PD, Christian schools, "Jesus Lunch"
Subway gift cards
Give of time as well as money...
from what you have, take an offering…
what do you have in your hand?
each have special things to contribute
How to give?
Dougie, don't forget to breathe
Moving forward...
Pray:
“Lord, am I a hilarious giver?

Question: What new habit, or best practice, might you make today?

ideas:
Elders sent out an email recently...

Israel once was told to stop giving, the temple had enough!
