Human- Cristina Perri, an Analysis
Lyrics
Speaker/Occasion
The speaker in Human is someone who has been pushed and pushed and has had to carry too much and forced so much, but they're at a breaking point. They're trying to tell people "I can do it, but it's gonna take all i have. I'm only human." So to me, it sounds like an AP student at MHCHS or someone who's been asked for too much.
Poetic Devices
I'll get through it.

But I'm only human
Poetic Devices Cont.
Parallelism
The Video
This is the offical music video for the song
I can turn it on
Be a good machine
I can hold the weight of worlds
If that's what you need
Be your everything

I can do it
I can do it
I'll get through it

But I'm only human
And I bleed when I fall down
I'm only human
And I crash and I break down
Your words in my head, knives in my heart
You build me up and then I fall apart
'Cause I'm only human
Caesura- The significance of the pause here is to emphasize, yes the speaker is willing to do what's asked, but it's hard.
I can fake a smile
I can force a laugh
I can dance and play the part
The speaker is emphasizing the CAN and calling attention to the phrasing
But I'm only human
And I bleed when I fall down
I'm only human
And I crash and I break down
Your words in my head, knives in my heart
You build me up and then I fall apart
'Cause I'm only human
Refrain-
While commonly called the chorus when dealing with music, it's the same thing. Here is the focus of the song and the message.
Understatement
I'm only human
Just a little human
This moment also comes at the climax of the song, and perhaps shows how when so much is forced and expected, you really do feel like a machine
