8 Parts Parts of Speech Name a person, place, thing or idea.
Examples: Boy, book, school, thought. Nouns Verbs Link subject to predicate or help another verb.
Examples: am, is, are, was, can, shall, will, could, should. Linking/Helping Verbs Action verbs describe an action
such as walk, run, ride, carry, etc. Action Verbs Adjectives describe nouns. They answer the following questions: What kind? How many? What color? Which one?

Examples: pretty, special, spooky, silly Adjectives Articles are a special type
of adjective. There are only three
of them: the, a, an. Articles Adverbs modify verbs, another adverb or adjective. Answers how, when or where. Adverbs Slowly, swiftly, very, backward, tomorrow, here, softly, often. Examples: Takes the place of a noun. Examples: I, we, me, us, mine, your, yours, you, he, she, her, it, its, their. Pronouns Connective word that joins a group of words to the rest of a sentence. Examples: of, to, under, over, beneath, by, before, under, and many more. Prepositions Connecting words that join words, groups or sentences. Conjunctions for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so FANBOYS: A verbal is a word formed from a verb but functioning as a different part of speech such as a subject or predicate. Verbals A gerund is an "ing" verb that functions as a noun. The phrase is the gerund plus its compliments and modifiers.

Examples:
WALKING IN THE MOONLIGHT is a romantic way to end a date. (Subject)
He particularly enjoyed WALKING IN THE
MOONLIGHT. (Direct object)
Gerund Phrase A verbal that functions as an adjective. A participle is a verb form (past or present) that functions like an adjective. The phrase is the participle plus its modifiers.
Examples:
BLINDED BY THE LIGHT, Sarah walked into the concert hall
SWIMMING FOR HIS LIFE, John crossed the channel. Participial Phrase Consists of the word "to" plus a verb. These can functions as adjectives, adverbs, or nouns.
