Substansi gelatinosa (SG) yang ada pada bagian ujung dorsal serabut saraf spinal cord mempunyai peran sebagai pintu gerbang (gating Mechanism), mekanisme gate control ini dapat memodifikasi dan merubah sensasi nyeri yang datang sebelum mereka sampai di korteks serebri dan menimbulkan nyeri.

Rangsangan pada serat saraf besar akan meningkatkan aktivitas subtansia gelatinosa yang mengakibatkan tertutupnya pintu mekanisme sehingga aktivitas sel T terhambat dan menyebabkan hantaran rangsangan ikut terhambat.
