Karana is a young indian girl who lives on The island of the Blue Dolphins in the village of Ghalas-at. She was digging for roots with her younger brother when they saw

a strange thing floating towards their island. Is it a shell? Is it a bird? No, it's a ship! Some Russians rowed to their island and got out. The chief of the Ghalas-at tribe spoke to the lead Russian, and agreed they could hunt for otters in their waters.

The Aleuts tried to run away without paying the tribe. Them running away caused a battle, in the end the Aleuts won.

White men come to the island to take the people to safety.Everyone boards the ship, except for Ramo, who has gone back to get something.
When Karana realizes, she jumps over board and swims to shore.

Karana and Ramo got back to the huts to find wild dogs eating their abalone the the tribe had left behind when leaving. the next day they collected food to keep them alive.

ramo wants to be chief of ghalas-at. Karana calls him chief Ramo but he doesn't like that name. He goes off and comes back with a better name. it is chief Tanyositlopai.

He says he wants to go down and get the canoes, but Karana doesn't want him to. He goes in the night. Karana goes to find him and she finds him dead.

Karana has been traveling across the ocean, seaching for the people of Galas-at, as they were taken to a new island for protection agence a wild storm. she has now headed back to the island of the blue dolphins, due to a hole in her coneo.

IN CHAPTER 17 KARANA MADE A NEW SPEAR FOR FISHING. RONTU THE DOG WENT TO FIGHT THE REST OF THE PACK, IN THE END HE WON AND WENT BACK TO KARANA'S HOUSE.

IN CHAPTER 14 KARANA PLANS TO GET THE LEADER OF THE PACK. SHE HITS HIM BUT DOESN'T KILL HIM.
CHAPTER 15
IN CHAPTER 15 KARANA FINDS THE LEADER OF THE PACK OF THE DOGS. SHE HITS HIM AGAIN BUT STILL, DOESN'T KILL HIM. SHE TAKES HIM HOME AND FIXES HIS WOUND. HE STAYS FOR DAYS UNTIL HE RUNS AWAY. SHE CALLS AND CALLS. HE DOESN'T COME. THEN SHE FINDS HIM INSIDE. SHE GIVES HIM A NAME AFTER A WHILE. HIS NAME IS RONTU.
CHAPTER 16
IN CHAPTER 16 KARANA TAKES THE DOG LOTS OF PLACES. SHE TAKES HIM FISHING, HUNTING, TO GET WATER AND MANY OTHERS. RONTU STAYS WITH KARANA FOR AGES AND AGES.
