A toddler grows 3-5 inches in one year, but nutrition is a top priority. During this transition period, between the age of 12-24 months, is when they are learning to eat table food and accepting new tastes and textures.

Depending on size, age, and activity level, toddlers generally need about 1,000-1,400 calories a day.

So make food fun!
Children are more likely to eat
food they help prepare.

-Organize meals, sleep and
snacks to allow optimal
appetite
-Limit the consumption
of sweet/sugary desserts
Who says your toddler can’t have turkey-cheese pinwheels for breakfast or oatmeal for dinner? As long as it’s nutritious, it does not matter when he eats it. Serve whole-wheat pancakes with fruit for lunch or a grilled-cheese sandwich for breakfast. Your toddler may get such a kick out of it, he’ll be more than happy to eat up.

High metabolic demands are less for a toddler than they are for an infant, so they tend to eat less food.

high in Omega 3 fats
beware of mercury
low mercury: salmon, flounder, tilapia, trout, pollock, catfish
avoid d/t high in mercury: shark, swordfish, tilefish, king mackerel

Seafood

Milk- fat-free or low-fat
2 to 2 1/2 cups per day
Water- fluoridated if tap water
read labels on store bought for added sugars
Fruit juices-1/2 to 3/4 cup per day
fruit drinks are not the same have added sugars

Beverages
Never give your child a vitamin or mineral supplement without first discussing it with your doctor.
