Transcript of Maria Goretti
the life of......
Maria was born in Corinaldo, Ancona, Italy, on October 16 1890
Maria Goretti is a patron of youth, young women, purity and victims of rape
Her feast day is
I chose this saint due to her bravery, forgiveness and self respect she showed at such a young age. She was brave sticking up for what she believed in. She showed forgiveness when she was able to forgive Alexander and overcome what he did to her. She shows self respect to herself and body. Overall this saint represents many virtues the youth of today should use in their lives.
Her father died when she was young due to Malaria, and her mother had to struggle to feed and take care of her seven children, Antonia (who died during infancy), Angelo,Mariano,Alessandro, Ersila, Teresa and Maria
In 1902 an 18-year-old neighbor,Alexander, grabbed her from her steps and tried to rape her. When Maria said that she would rather die than submit, Alexander started stabbing her with a knife.
As she lay in the hospital, her last words were words of forgiveness. She forgave her attacker that was now sentenced to thirty years in prison.
Her forgiveness did not stop there she came into one of Alexanders dreams to once again forgive him. He dreamt that he was in a lush, beautiful garden, Maria was there, standing before him with a bouquet of flowers once again speaking the words of forgiveness.
let us pray
Maria Goretti is inspiring to me because she was a very brave young girl who is a clear example of prosperity and the virtue of humility. She was very brave defending her virginity. This teaches us to have respect for our bodies and ourselves and teaching us chastity. At such a young age (12), she was very clear and noble voicing her beliefs to Alexander causing her death. This teaches us to always stick with your beliefs no matter how many people try to shut us down. Maria also teaches us forgiveness. Maria was able to forgive Alexander after he tried to rape her and killed her. This took her a lot of courage for her to be able to forgive someone who has done great wrong towards her. Overall Maria Goretti represents many virtues that the youth of today should follow in order to become a good Christian.
