GROWING YOUR MINDSET ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS REVIEW OF ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS OUR UNDERLYING BELIEFS ABOUT INTELLIGENCE AFFECT OUR MOTIVATION AND BEHAVIOR!
*WHAT ARE UNDERLYING BELIEFS?
*WHAT ARE THE TWO TYPES OF "MINDSETS" AND HOW DO THEY DIFFER?
*WHICH MINDSET IS MORE LIKELY TO MOTIVATE US TO LEARN AND ACHIEVE? *UNDERLYING BELIEFS -- DEEP SEATED BELIEFS THAT WE MAY OR MAY NOT BE AWARE OF BUT THAT HAVE PROFOUND EFFECTS ON OUR MOTIVATION AND BEHAVIOR.
*FIXED MINDSET -- BELIEF THAT ABILITY IS FIXED AT BIRTH
*GROWTH MINDSET -- BELIEF THAT PEOPLE CAN IMPROVE THEIR ABILITIES WITH EFFORT.
*STUDENTS AND ADULTS FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY SPLIT 50/50 IN TERMS OF THEIR BELIEFS. UNDERLYING BELIEFS AND MINDSETS *ONE'S MINDSET HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH IQ AS MEASURED BY TESTS.
*THE MAN THAT DEVELOPED THE FIRST IQ TEST, ALFRED BINET, DID NOT INTEND THE TEST TO MEASURE STUDENTS' UNCHANGEABLE INTELLIGENCE.
*IN ADDITION TO INTELLIGENCE, WE CAN HAVE MINDSETS ABOUT OTHER ABILITIES. *WHAT ARE SOME OTHER ABILITIES OR TRAITS WHICH WE CAN HAVE A FIXED OR GROWTH MINDSET? MINDSET *THE DEBATE OVER THE DEGREES TO WHICH WE ARE AFFECTED BY HEREDITY AND OUR ENVIRONMENT.
*BOTH PLAY A ROLE
*ONE MAY NATURALLY FAVOR ONE MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCE, BUT IT WON'T BECOME A TOP STRENGTH UNLESS YOU APPLY EFFORT AND HAVE REPEATED OPPORTUNITIES TO DEVELOP IT. NATURE VS NURTURE STUDENTS CAN CHOOSE A GROWTH MINDSET AND BECOME SMARTER THROUGH EFFORT! NATURE VS NURTURE *THINK OF THE BRAIN AS A MUSCLE-- THE MORE YOU EXERCISE IT, THE STRONGER IT BECOMES.
*WHAT MATTERS MOST IS THE MINDSET YOU HOLD, BECAUSE THE TWO MINDSETS AFFECT OUR MOTIVATION AND BEHAVIOR IN DIFFERENT WAYS. PERFORMANCE GOALS AND MASTERY GOALS *PERFORMANCE GOALS - EXTERNAL INDICATORS OF COMPETENCE, SUCH AS GRADES AND RECOGNITION.
*MASTERY GOALS - INTERNAL INDICATORS OF COMPETENCE, SUCH AS MASTERING A NEW SKILL. PERFORMANCE VS. MASTERY WHICH TYPE OF GOAL DOES EACH MINDSET TEND TO PROMOTE?
WHICH MINDSET DO YOU THINK BETTER MOTIVATES STUDENTS TO LEARN AND ACHIEVE?
**WE CAN ALL DEVELOP A MASTERY APPROACH TO LEARNING, WE CAN CHANGE THE WAY WE THINK AND BEHAVE AS LEARNERS! DEVELOPMENT OF MINDSETS *HOW AN WHERE DO YOU THINK WE LEARN OUR MINDSETS?
*WHAT LABELS USED IN SCHOOL LEAD US TO THINK WITH A FIXED MINDSET ABOUT OUR OWN OR OTHERS' ABILITIES?
*WHAT ARE SOME EXAMPLES OF FAMOUS PERSONS OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW WHO HAVE DISPLAYED A GROWTH MINDSET?
