They use it selectively:
They can't own gadgets, but they can use non-Amish people's gadgets
They use electricity and machines in farming
They can modify machines to fulfill their purposes
They can use batteries

Wife: housekeeping and motherhood, nourish children's spiritual life
They support each other from birth to death

It is an opportunity to get in touch with the modern world. Only some of them do that.
