E' stato un pittore e incisore giapponese, realizzatore di ukiyo-e.
I suoi lavori furono un'importante fonte di ispirazione per molti impressionisti europei come Claude Monet e post-impressionisti come Vincent Van Gogh e il pittore francese Paul Gauguin.
