What is Motivational Interviewing?
Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a counseling approach developed by William Miller, Ph.D. and Stephen Rollnick Ph.D.

It is a collaborative, person-centered form of guiding to elicit and strengthen motivation for change.

A collaborative conversation to strengthen a person's own motivation and commitment to change.
Will this session make you an expert in MI?

Will you be considered a qualified counselor in MI after listening to it?

Will it help you understand a way to approach conversations with ambivalent or resistant-to-quit tobacco user?

Ask Open Ended Questions: the more a person talks, the more chances they have to change.
Provide Affirmations: be positive and encouraging.
Practice Reflective Listening: make a guess at the meaning of a person's statement. Check that you understand what someone means.
Summarize: when you summarize what someone says, it can help them organize their thoughts.
5 R's of MI
Relevance: Everyone has different reasons for quitting. A person can identify why quitting is important to them.

Risks: What might a person identify as the potential negative consequences of tobacco use.

Rewards: What might a person identify as the potential benefits of quitting tobacco?

Roadblocks: What barriers keep a person from trying quitting or successfully quitting?

Repetition: Repeat discussions with these "R's" in future opportunities to meet with tobacco users. It may take many supportive interactions to help a person quit.
Importance and Confidence Scale
On a scale of 1 to 10 how important is it that you quit tobacco? Why?

On a scale of 1 to 10 how confident are you that you can quit tobacco?

"Why did you rate yourself at 4 and not 3?"

"What would have to change for you to rate yourself at 5 or 6?"
Practice!
It takes time to get comfortable with these communication techniques.

Video Demonstrations:
Correct technique
Incorrect technique
Practice Informally with your friends and family in everyday situations - not just tobacco.
Try to practice just one skill at a time - Core Concepts, OARS, 5 R's or Importance and Confidence Ruler
You do not need to use all the techniques in every session.
MI is helpful in some situations, but it is not the right approach for all people all the time.

Many types of cessation advocates and providers can use motivational interviewing techniques.
Motivational Interviewing
Care about people. Try to understand what they are feeling and why this might be challenging for them.
The difference between how a person wants their life to be and how it actually is. The difference between values and actions.
Arguing the point only leads to more resistance.
Change can be scary - resistance to change is normal. Let people make the case for not changing, and this will likely help them move toward change.
Support autonomy, even when the choice is NOT to change. Develop confidence and offer reassurance.
