Celebration in Malaysia
Dipavali- row of lights
"Deepavali," "Diwali," "Divali..." - different Indian languages
This celebration lasts for 5 days
2 days before the night and 2 days after
Begins on the 13th day of the dark half of the lunar month Ashvina to the second day of the light half of Karttika
Around October and November
Signifies good over evil, light over darkness, understanding over ignorance, hope over despair
Day 1 - Lakshmi's birthday (this is why candles are lit all through the night)
Day 3 - Lakshmi chooses Vishnu as her husband

Day 2: Narak Chaturdasi- Krishna defeated Narakasura, the demon, taking fear away from the world
Day 3: The worshiping of Lakshmi occurs and celebrates good over evil, light over darkness
Day 4: Krishna made the people of Vraja to preform Govardhan Pooja (Controller over nature)
Day 5: Bhai teeka (Bhai Dooj)- Yama, lord of death, visited Yamuna, his sister, on this day
