Transcript of Improving our written work

Improving our written work
Lloyds TSB - this is real life
Remember - adverts nearly always have narratives, even very simple ones.
You answered a media forms narrative question on The Three Little Pigs Guardian advert
Today we are going to try another narrative question to improve how we write about narrative structures.
Check your responses
Even if you didn't do the narrative question, read through your responses to check your paragraphs. Are you developing a point fully or are you covering lots of different areas in not much detail?
New question
What techniques are used to communicate the narrative the audience?
Starter
Explain in your own words what these narrative terms mean:
Binary opposition
Enigma code
Condensed narrative
Linear narrative
Toderov
Propp
Remember - narrative and genre will come under media forms in the exam.
Why we need to improve
The use of enigma codes woven into the narrative plays a big part in keeping the audience interested; making them basically ask who done it? The non-diegetic music played a huge part in building the tension and keeping the advert very fast paced and quick moving.
Some good application of theory but the point is not fully explained before moving onto another point.
To convey the narrative of the three little pigs they have used the binary opposites of humans and animals, this binary opposite is famously known from the story of three little pigs therefor this informs the audience on the story line that they are going to witness, the first shot that is shown is a cauldron this is then followed by a newspaper text saying ‘wolf boiled alive’ this helps convey the story however cultural competence is expected by the guardian.
Not developing the point before moving onto another point.
How do the audience understand the story?
Remember - still think about audience even though this is a media forms question
What story/stories are being told?
How are those stories being communicated?
Camera shots/editing
Arrangement of the mise en scene
Enigma codes
Condensed narrative
Linear narrative
Music/sound
Toderov
Propp
