"The Giver " Chapters 20-23
Transcript of "The Giver " Chapters 20-23
In the chapters, 20-23, the Giver and Jonas sets up a plan where Jonas escapes to the Elsewhere. Jonas overhears his father talking about Gabriel's Release. When he escapes, he takes his father's bike because it has a child's seat where Gabriel can sit during the trip. As they journey to the Elsewhere, they encounter Searchers in plane, hunger from the lack of food, and the cold from the blizzard. At the end of this story, he arrives to the Elsewhere, and hears something which is, music.
Pg. 143 : "I will take care of that, sir. I will take care of that, sir," Jonas mimicked in a cruel, sarcastic voice. "I will do whatever you like sir. I will kill people sir. Old people? Small newborn people? I'd be happy to kill them sir."
Contextualize: I think this is the breaking point for Jonas. He realizes the imperfections of their "perfect" community.
Pg.168 : Downward, downward, faster and faster. Suddenly he was aware with certainty and joy that below, ahead, they were wating for him; and that they were waiting too for the baby. For the first time, he heard something that he knew ti be music. He heard people singing.
Contextualize: This is when Jonas reaches freedom and is no longer confined to the rules of his community.
1) Why do you think Jonas was so devastated when he found out the true meaning of release?
2)Why do you think Jonas no longer cared about himself anymore when he and gabe has escaped?
3)What do you think happened at the and?
We all get frustrated on something that we can't take it anymore. Like Jonas couldn't take being a Receiver since he had to feel all those pains that no one else had to feel. Sometimes we feel pain that we feel like giving up and just sleep forever, and never wake up. But like Jonas, did we have to continue another way just like he tried to find a happier life somewhere else.
