How Global Warming Affects Polar Bears By: Jordan Palumbo :) The polar bear population is about 20,000 to 25,000 but is decreasing rapidly due to global warming. In September of 2004, the U.S. Minerals Management Service documented that four polar bears drown by trying to swim to safety. According to researchers of the National Center of Atmospheric Research, within the next 20 years the Arctic Sea ice will be reduced by 80 percent because of global warming. Some Minerals Management Researchers found that from 1979 to 1991, 87 percent of the polar bears were mostly found on sea ice. But, from 1992 to 2004, that percentage dropped to 33 percent. Sources:
