German high command had to organize a massive offensive against Russia to prove German armed forces were still mighty
Russia planned huge counter-attack, already anticipating German movement
Wehrmacht armed with new weaponry such as the new Ferdinand self-propelled gun
Attack on Kursk: 900,000 soldiers; 10,000 artillery guns; 2,700 tanks; 2,000 aircraft
material damage done to german army was huge : 500,000 men killed,wounded, missing and vast amounts of armor lost The Battle of Kursk was a turning point in the war on the Soviet front. It was also the greatest tank battle of WWII, ending in a Soviet victory. The loss significantly weakened and stopped the German lines; afterward, the Germans were pushed back to the defensive.
