"The Deagle Has Landed". Video clip. Accessed October 10, 2013, Youtube,
In 1984, Golden Books, home
of the Poky Little Puppy,
published a pair of Gremlins
volumes: “A New Friend” and
“To Catch a Gremlin”. Both
books were worded like the
“Poky Little Puppy” with full-color pics & sentences like, “Billy thought Gizmo had enough excitement for the day, so he tucked him safely in bed.” Well both books tell the story of Billy getting a “Mogwai” for Christmas. It also tells how the town turns to shit after the “Gremlins” start destroying it.
Theme Park Rides
The film inspired a
now-discontinued theme
park ride at the Warner
Bros. parks in Australia &
Germany which each
opened in the early 1990s.
Visitors were ushered
into a vehicle that would take them through the archive to escape the beasts. It wasn't much of a thrill ride, & it was replaced in Australia after ten years with the "Scooby-Doo Spooky Coaster," but remained in operation in Germany until 2004...
Sequels & Knock-Offs
Racist Movie??
Golden Books
The film not only
spawned a sequel,
Gremlins 2: The New
Batch, but is believed to
have been the inspiration,
or at least similar to, several later unrelated films about small monsters. These include Critters, Ghoulies, Troll, Hobgoblins, Beasties, Kamillions, Spookies, and Munchies. Both Critters and Ghoulies actually began development before Gremlins.
Not everyone
fell in love with
the movie. At the
time, and for
years after wards,
some people said
the movie used the gremlins as a racist caricature of black youth. It was pointed out that the creatures eating fried chicken, break dancing to hip-hop, and wearing newsboy caps and dark glasses at night as reflecting "negative African-American stereotypes," and in May of 2012, Complex Magazine labeled it as one of the 50 most racist films ever made.

Typically very gentle and loving.
Bad Mogwai
Good Mogwai “Gizmo”
The Mogwai are an a creation by the alien scientist Mogturmen. According to the novelizations of the books that were meant to all be good but a genetic mistake caused all but 1 in 100,000 to be evil.

Mogwai
--Translated from Mandarin Chinese
the term means monster or demon.

Enjoy mayhem and destruction.
Will do anything to eat after midnight.
Will band together in hatred of everything else, but remain violent toward one another.

“Our gremlins are somewhat different—they’re sort of green and they have big mouths and they smile a lot and they do incredibly, really nasty things to people and enjoy it all the while”
DID YOU KNOW?!
Most of the special effects that were done in this movie relied on puppetry.

Other special effects required large marionettes of mogwai faces and ears that were produced for close ups.
