Census takers may have written the date down incorrectly, or handwriting may have been mistranscribed. When asking about age, census takers commonly asked for a person's age on their last birthday. Some census form headings reflect this. There are other details that can be used to confirm identity, such as place of birth, parents' names, and parents' places of birth. daughter 2nd marriage Born: 23 August 1901

Charles R. Gowen died last night in the Dunn Memorial Hospital from injuries sustained in an automobile-train accident on the Stipp crossing west of Heltonville.
The train fireman saw the Pontiac automobile approach the track, and hurriedly gave the signal to to apply the emergency brakes, however the train struck the car.
Charles suffered general body bruises and lacerations, in addition to a severe blow over the left side of the abdomen, which ruptured the small bowel, producing peritonitis and causing death. Last night he lapsed into unconsciousness and died shortly afterward.
Two passengers in the Pontiac survived.
Charles was graduated from the Bedford High School in 1889, and later was graduated
from the School of Law at the University of Kentucky. He became a prominent Bedford attorney and secretary of the Lawrence County Bar Association.
He was active in legal and business circles of the city and was held in high esteem.
The news of his death was received with deep regret throughout the County and all who knew him deplore his tragic fate.
He was a member of the First Methodist Church of Bedford; and the Willis Stuart Lodge #226 F&A.M. of Louisville in Kentucky; as well as the bar association.
He was greatly interested in antique furniture, and his collection of ancient clocks was a fine and extensive one.
