Theme:
Find THE MEssage
Themes are usually positive. They are not rules: "Don't....." "Never..."
Themes also should not include characters' names.

Tim hated his old baseball glove. He wanted to play with a new glove, but he didn’t have any money, so he decided to steal it. But when Tim got caught stealing the glove, his parents said he couldn’t play baseball all summer.

Instead of "Tim shouldn't steal" or "Stealing is wrong,"
a better theme is "Work for what you want"
Finding THE MEssage
Include part of the story to explain theme (cite textual evidence).

Theme: Work for what you want.
Details: Tim wants a new glove.
Tim does not work hard, but steals a new glove.
Tim does not get to play baseball all summer.

The theme of this story is work hard for what you want. Tim does not work hard for his new glove, and in the end, he doesn't get to play baseball.
Summarizing
Summaries should include theme and be objective (no opinions).

The theme of the story was work hard for what you want. Tim wanted a new glove for baseball, but stole one instead of working for it. As punishment, his parents did not let him play baseball at all.
