Self Image:
The idea is that Models CAN'T be "fat" or even "average size". Methods models use to get skinny include: cigarettes, diet pills, laxatives, prescription drugs that suppress the appetite

Stories suggest that some modeling agents encourage girls to do illegal body harming drugs in order to speed up metabolism and eat less.

If women feel bigger than they are, they are more likely to want to lose weight or may develop an eating disorder.
Why is it important to be aware of the media's impact on our self image?
Information on Self-Image
Boys can also face lower self-esteem if they feel their bodies do not measure up to the idea of "perfection" presented by the media.
The Center explains that media suggests males should have the following traits:
six-pack abs
acne-free faces
tall height
toned arms
When boys don't have these traits, they seek out ways to get them such as exercising too much, using steroids or dieting.

Does any of this sound familiar?

- "I'm too tall."
- "I'm too skinny."
- "If only I were shorter, taller, had curly hair, straight hair, a smaller nose, longer legs I would be happy."

- Teens spend most of their time on these media outlets which decreases their self-image.
- Most Middle School Students will spend just about the same amount of time studying as they do on social networks.
- Social Networks have caused many other issues not just issues with self-esteem.

On a typical day, 8 – 18-year-olds are engaged with some form of media for about 7.5 hours ( TV, computer, magazines, video games).

Why are we talking to people in your age group?

- Negative self image may become prominent due to long term exposure to media.

- This impacts your physical, emotional, social, and psychological development.

- Experiences you go through now affect who you become in the future.
Exposing young women to images of thin, attractive models increases body dissatisfaction and negative self-image leading to serious frustration and obsession with their outer appearance.
The effects of the media on girls younger than 18 has made them feel less confident because they don't feel that they measure up to media's physical standards.

The Impact of Body Image
This disease has the highest death rate of all psychiatric disorders.
It most commonly starts at age 15.
It may appear following a stressful event that has occurred during adolescence.
Long term effects of exposure to media during adolescence creates the foundation for negative self-esteem effects during early adulthood.

When you are healthy you are happy! You feel better, you are able to accomplish more. Don't diet, diets are unhealthy. Make life changes that will benefit your body in the future.

Social media has made it easy for teens to not be consistent (ie. have a "double life").
Social media presents you with countless opportunities (if not demands) to describe in words or pictures your physical attributes.
Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter constantly suggest for you to put yourself on visual display.

As individuals, we have the power to decide what beauty is or is not.
Should beauty be unhealthy?

Should it be fake?
Should beauty be unattainable?

Then you are BEAUTIFUL!!! You have given someone great satisfaction to see, hear, and think about. You have delighted the senses of his/her mind with the beauty that you have radiating from within.

Unfortunately, most of the media we are exposed to does not show people in a realistic way.
Characters on TV are often shown with unrealistic, "Perfect" bodies.
Example: TV shows, magazines, Photoshop.

The Media has other effects on females:
Ads persuade females that wrong eating habits are right.

Girls feel as if they don't have what everyone else has.

The media makes girls think that those with ideal body images have perfect lives.

Teens may compare themselves to the idealized images of the human form that the media presents even though these images are not realistic or entirely attainable.
The impact of media on self-image is what has caused teens to want to change their physical appearance.
Boys/ men want to look taller, muscular, and well dressed because that's what the media tells us that we should all look like.
Many of the issues that have resulted from this are that boys, just like girls, want to be something different from what they really are. This causes their self-esteem to decrease.
A survey about body image conducted by Spear in 2006 concluded that just about 59% of females and 29% of males ages 14-18 were all trying to change their physical appearance.

8% of boys and 18% of girls have gone without food for about 24 hours or more to lose weight.
A study was conducted that explained the individuals from the age of 9 to 13 years old had lower self-esteem and variety of health issue at the age of 15.
Being under weight
Short term effects include:

inability to concentrate
lower pulse rate
emotional rollercoaster
Long term effects include:

bone mineral loss
premature osteoporosis (where bone can weaken 2-3x faster than would be normal for that age)
short and long term reproductive damage
frequent over-use injuries
growth of fine body hair on face and arms
extreme sensitivity to cold
difficulty swallowing
swollen glands
blood shot eyes
damaged teeth
This can all be life threatening and life shortening.
Are these effects any more or less serious than being clinically overweight?
Interestingly enough there is some research to suggest that from mortality perspective it is healthier to be overweight and strong than to be underweight and weak. Just as someone who is legitimately overweight needs to work at getting back down to a healthy weight, one who is underweight needs to work on getting the body back up to a healthy weight.
Effects of being overweight:

high blood pressure
diabetes (can be hereditary as well)
metabolic syndrome
reproductive problems
What is the happy medium between the two?
It is important and healthy to maintain a healthy weight. Don't give up your happiness and health to achieve something unhealthy and unattainable.

How did this make YOU feel?
Was that friend smaller or bigger than you?
Did it make you wonder if you were fat or ugly too?
(YOU'RE NOT!!!!)
How do we as members of society reinforce negative self image?
Social Media sites like Facebook and Twitter have become a huge part of most teens' lives.
But, do they help or hurt self-esteem and body image?
It's not just the exposure to these images that is damaging. It's our interaction with them - the pressure to have the "perfect" profile pics, the comparisons we make, and the dangers of constant scrutiny of our own and others' bodies.

Adolescent girls and boys were surveyed about their Facebook habits and body image.

Or should beauty be found in nature? Should it be realistic, healthy, growing, and attainable?
Ask yourself, is your definition of beauty healthy? Is it natural, or is it tampered with? Can it be attained? Or is it too far out of reach?

Would you rather be liked for your looks or your clothes?
Or would you rather be liked for the beautiful person you are by nature on the inside?

How can we change our thinking so that the media matches what we decide is beautiful, instead of feeding into what shapes our negative self- image?
Which is more Beautiful?
How many hours do you think you spend watching TV, on the computer, reading magazines, or playing video games per day?

Think of it like this: If we are sick, but do not notice the symptoms, how will we be able to find a cure to keep the sickness from damaging ourselves?
Which is worse? Being over weight? Or being under weight?
