Before becoming a painter, he tried being a preacher
Taught himself to paint at 27 years old
Attended the Academy of Arts in Brussels, but was considered a "dunce"

"I dream my painting and I paint my dream"

Believe it or not:
Throughout his life, Vincent van Gogh was ridiculed and looked down upon. His art was not praised as it is today, but more ignored. Van Gogh even wrote himself, "As a painter, I will never amount to anything important. I am absolutely sure of it."
One of the things, aside from his paintings, that Vincent van Gogh is known for is cutting off his own ear in a rage of emotion. He even painted a self-portrait with his bandaged ear.

What's This?
Cool! A line drawing that van Gogh created of his masterpiece.
Here we see a letter that van Gogh wrote, likely to his brother Theo.
"Potato Eaters" was described by van Gogh as a family eating potatoes that they had grown themselves and dug up from the Earth. This is an example of the deeper themes apparent in the post-impressionism era.

van Gogh was known to put oil directly on the canvas. He did not mix colors. This kept the hue intense and vibrant.
Hello Color!
Some theories suggest that van Gogh painted
Wheatfield with Crows
just before he took his own life. The crows are said to represent death swooping in. Other theories indicate that van Gogh may not have taken his life at all. Rather, an accident claimed his life. Supporting this theory is evidence of various
paintings of wheat fields
and plains, such as
Plain
of Auvers
, shortly prior to
van Gogh's death.
